It all started here
Smarsh was founded in Brooklyn, New York. Founder, Stephen Marsh, believed that the financial industry needed a better way to archive, store, and monitor its data in order to comply with increasingly tight regulations. A cloud-based archiving, search and analytics service, Smarsh has been meeting the needs of financial firms since day one. In 2004, Smarsh relocated its corporate headquarters to Portland, Oregon.
Smarsh was first named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies in America in 2008 - a status it maintained for seven consecutive years through 2015. The company also made the Deloitte Fast 500 list from 2009 through 2015. Smarsh has received a host of other awards including the Oregon Technology Award, Boston Product Excellence Award, KM World: Trend-Setting Products Award, Wealth Management Industry Award, Financial Technology Forum News Award and many more. In addition to being recognised as a market leader by both Gartner and Forrester, Smarsh has earned 'Top Player' status in the Radicati Group, Cloud Information Archiving Report each year since 2014
Smarsh added new capabilities to its archiving platform in 2010, including the Supervision Module to enhance its customers' ability to meet compliance requirements and to get the most out of the data they were archiving. The company has continued to innovate by adding further modules and supporting new content types as they emerge to keep up with latest trends. The Smarsh platform now supports over 80 different content types and this number continues to grow.
In 2014, Smarsh launched its Europe office in London, UK to meet the needs of financial services firms throughout Europe.
In 2015, Smarsh was named a leader in the 2015 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving, a position it has held and improved on since.
Also in 2015, Smarsh became the first archiving vendor to develop relationships with leading mobile carriers to enable direct capture of text messages from mobile devices, which was key to the needs of the financial services industry.
